Mucormycosis (phycomycosis)
• rare
• very aggressive life-threatening fungal infection
• Mucor spp. or Rhizopus.
• in immunosuppressed, DKA or RF .
• elderly, malignancy, AIDS.
• fungal septic necrosis and infarction of tissues of nasopharynx and orbit.

Clinical features for Mucormycosis (phycomycosis)
• Black crusty material in nasopharynx
• cranial nerve palsies (III, IV, V, VI, IIn)
• obvious orbital inflammation.
Investigation for Mucormycosis (phycomycosis)
• Biopsy: fungal stains (non-septate branching hyphae)
• FBC, U/E ,Glu.
• CT is a must in all cases of coma with Diabetic ketoacidosis
Treatment for Mucormycosis (phycomycosis)
• Admit, liaise with microbiologist, ENT specialist ± physician.
• Correct underlying disease (diabetic ketoacidosis) where possible, without this, the prognosis is extremely poor.
• IV antifungals (guided by microbiology,high-dose amphotericin).
• Some advocate hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
• early and aggressive surgical debridement by ENT specialist ± orbital exenteration (for severe or unresponsive disease).

- MUCOR MYCOSIS REFERS TO…… infection caused by fungi in order of mucorales . Most common species are…rhizopus (m c),rhizomucor, cunninghamella, apophysomy ces, saksenaea, absidia, muccor, andsyncephal astrum.
- MUCORMYCOSISMucor species Rhizopus sp
- MAJOR ROUTE OF INFECTION INHALTION. INGESTION. TRAUMATIC INOCULTION.
- Pathophysiology Angioinvasion Vessel thrombosis Tissue necrosis
- EPIDEMIOLOGY INTERNATIONALY 1% PATIENTS WITH LOW IMMUNITY. MUCOR MYCOSIS CARRIES A VERY HIGH MORTALITY (50%-85%). NO RACIAL FACTORS PREDISPOSE. SEX IS NOT LIKELY TO AFFECT.
- MUCORMYCOSIS CLINICAL PRESNTATION Five clinical forms of mucormycosis : Rhinocerebral ,pulmonary ,gastrointestinal , primary cutaneouse and disseminated. Rhinocerebral type has the highest frequency and mortality.

- Take place in *vegetative reproduction *Sexual reproduction *Asexual reproduction
- It consists of mother mycelium Each fragments can split into many sub- units. Each sub-units have a capability to grow like new mycelium. Like fragmentation methods.
- It mainly takes in three spores. 1) Sporangiospores 2) Chlamydospores 3) Oidio spores. SPORANGIOSPORES: It takes place by steps: sporangiopores englongation Columenllaplasm bursting germination
- →Opportunistic infection of sinuses , nasal passages , oral cavity. →Rapid death. →Grow rapidly and release air- borne spores. →Enter through nose, oral mucosa and throat. →Attack immunelow peoples.
- Risk factors: →Diabetes Mellitus →Burns →Iron overload →Transplantation →Chemotheraphy →Intravenous drug use
- Rare diseases occur in patients who have prolonged neutropaenia. Treatment with deferoxamine Indistinguishable from Invasive Pulmonary Aspegillosis. Symptoms: fever , Cough , dyspnoea, Chest Pain, Pleural effusion. Species: Mucormycotina Spores -3 to 11 µm. Routes: Inhalation , cutaneous …
- Life-threatning diseases. Specimen: Nasal Seceations. Drug: amphotericin B ( sideeffects) Treatment: antifungal theraphy.
- Transmission: Inhalation of spores. Common in children. Affects Immuno-comprised patients. Symptoms varies depend upon the part of the body. Common Symptoms: abdominal pain, Bowel Obstruction, Vomiting , Bloody diarrhea,Dyspepsia. Prognosis is very poor.
- Rare, fatal complication disease. Multiorgans manifestations. Symptoms: mental status changes. Occur who are already sick from medical condition. Leads to coma.
- *Reddish and swollen skin, skin trauma, ulcer. *mainly painful patches of skin. * fungal enter through skin. *patients who are low Ig A and IgG antibodies. *skin theraphy , transplantation.
- *Very poor *Surgery can done depend upon area
- Antifungal medicine, usually amphotericin B, through a vein.
